Umang 2013

PANCHBHUTAM

21, 22 & 23 December 2013

Umang is a festival not merely a fest as the colleges term it to be. Voted the 5th best fest across Asia in 2009, Umang dates back its history to 1999. Started from a small room, it has built block by block to reach such a destination where the entire city looks forward to being a part of it. And this year breaking the silence of two years Umang was back with a bang to unleash yet another era of excellence. With 40 events on the card in the three-day festival and 25 college participation Umang created for itself a niche in the world of college festivals.

Umang is the most awaited festival of the city creating the finest themes which capture the minds of one and all. Umang provided a large platform for the upcoming talents across the city hosting about 40 events. It included Star events like Mr and Ms Umang, Bhawanipur Idol, Stand-up Comedy, Non Gas Cooking, Photography, Western and Eastern Dance, Antakshari, Western and Eastern singing, Western band, Beat boxing but also literary events like Debate, JAM and Verteez, Extempore, Creative Writing in different languages and Quiz. Umang also tested the creative skills of students by hosting events like sketching, Rangoli, Fruit and Vegetable designing, Dirty painting, and Theme it. Game lovers found it a perfect place to showcase their expertise in games like FIFA, Counter Strike and NFS.

The festival was able to bring different colleges under one roof. These colleges made Umang a success with their participation and appreciation of its themes. Different minds worked on concepts bringing out the theme of the festival and making it a success. Some of the colleges that actively participated in Umang are Goenka College of Commerce, Maulana Azad College, Shri Shikshayatan College, Lady Brabourne College, Bethune College, Jadavpur University, Presidency College, Rani Birla College, JDBI College, St Xaviers College, South City, North City, Jaipuria College, Heritage College, Loreto College, Scottish Church College and many more colleges of Kolkata. All these colleges fought it out to be the champion of Umang.

The Bhawanipur Education Society College won the overall championship but being the host college, handed the trophy over to St. Xavier’s College, who were the first runners-up. Such participation has taken Umang to its glory where it is today, such overwhelming responses are the incentives to the student body to host Umang on such a grand scale.

Umang owes its success to the youth across Kolkata as the motto for the festival is “for the students, of the students and by the students.”
